Peter¡¯s Vision
2
The voice spoke to him a
second time,
¡°Do not call
anything impure that God has made clean.¡±
(Acts 10:15)
3
After the time when Jesus
went up, the disciples of Jesus started scattering and preaching the gospel
wherever they went. And many people put their faith in Jesus.
4
At that time, Peter was a
guest in the home of Simon in Joppa and he preached the word of God there.
5
About noon, Peter went up
on the roof to pray to God because he wanted to pray without being disturbed.
As Christians, it is a very good habit to set aside specific time and a place
to pray every day like Peter.
6
While Peter was praying,
he became hungry and wanted something to eat,
and he fell into a trance.
7
He saw heaven opened and
something like a large sheet being let down
to earth by its four
corners.
8
It contained all kinds of
four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air.
Peter was very surprised.
9
Then the voice spoke to
him, ¡°Get
up, Peter. Kill and eat.¡±
10
Peter replied, ¡°Surely not, Lord I
have ever eaten anything impure or unclean.¡± In
Jewish culture, Jews were not allowed to eat all of the kinds of four-legged
animals, as well as some of the reptiles of the earth and lots of birds of
the air. That¡¯s why Peter replied that
he couldn¡¯t eat.
11
The voice told him a
second time, ¡°Why do you call anything impure or unclean that God has made clean
from heaven?¡± And then the sheet was taken back to
heaven.
12
This happened twice to
Peter. So he was wondering about the meaning of these visions.
13
At that precise moment,
some men stopped at the gate and called out, ¡°Is Simon who was known as Peter
staying here?¡± and Peter overheard it.
14
And the Spirit said to
him, ¡°Simon,
some men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to
go with them, for I have sent them.
15
Peter went down and said
to them, ¡°I¡¯m the one you¡¯re looking for. Why have you come?
16
The men replied, ¡°We have come from
Cornelius, the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is
respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to
his house so that he could hear what you have to say.
17
As Peter heard from them,
he realized what God has said to him through the trance three times. That
indicated a misunderstanding of the Jewish people that God did not love
Gentiles, but in fact God wanted to change his mind to love Gentiles as God
loved them.
18
Then Peter invited the men
into the house to be his guests for one night. The next day, Peter and the
brothers started out to Caesarea to meet Cornelius. God wants us to preach
the gospel for everyone in the world. As we see Peter, we need to learn his
obedience with a pure heart. In every moment, if we have faith and understand
God¡¯s desire like Peter, we can get the victory and we can do great
achievements through our faith in our Great God!
