David¡¯s Three Mighty Men

2

(2Samuel 23:17)

"Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!" he said. "Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?" And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.

3

The great king, David had many great mighty men.

I would like to introduce the three mighty men who among thirty did a great thing at the risk of their own lives.

4

During harvest time, they came down to David at the cave of Adullam.

A band of Philistines were encamping in the Valley of Rephiam.

5

That place was Bethlehem under the stronghold.

Bethlehem was David's hometown.

The Philistines were encamping in Bethlehem.

6

David thought deeply about the past.

He remembered that he had drunk water from the well of Bethlehem.

He wanted to drink that water again.

7

David longed for that water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" David knew that it was impossible to get the water from the well where the Philistines were encamping. However, he missed his hometown.

8

After hearing David's words, they said,

"Let's go to Bethlehem to take the water that David longs for."

9

The three mighty men ran to the stronghold of the Philistines to please their king.

They broke through the Philistine lines.

10

They bravely went toward the stronghold of the Philistines.

They attacked the Philistines quickly.

All the Philistines fell before the three mighty men.

11

They arrived at the well of Bethlehem.

They drew the water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem.

12

After coming back, they gave the water to King David.

¡°King, drink this water. We brought this water from Bethlehem."

13

David was surprised and asked the three mighty men.

"Did you really bring this water from the well in Bethlehem?"

"Yes, we did."

14

David felt both thankfulness and sorrow for these three mighty men who had listened to him and had gone into the enemy camp to bring back the water that he had wanted.

15

David, holding the water that the three men had brought, could not make himself drink it.

Because the water was the same as their blood for his sake.

16

So David offered the water to God. He poured it out before the LORD and said, "Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?"

17

The three mighty men wanted the king to be pleased. They had gone into the enemy camp with their own lives at stake and had brought the water that David wanted to drink. Because of this they were written as faithful men in the Bible.

18

We should live as faithfully as these three mighty men for our King Jesus.

19

Be a faithful person with all your heart, and God will remember your name.
