Honor your father and your mother
|
2
|
|
[Exodus 20:12]
"Honor
your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD
your God is giving you.

Do
you know where the ¡®Ten Commandments¡¯ are written?
It's
in Exodus (Chapter) 20.
The
Bible we read today is the fifth commandment among the Ten Commandments.
|
4
|
|
The
Ten Commandments Moses received directly from God on Mount Sinai.
God
has written down and gave it to the people who serve him.
God
wrote ten commandments on two tablets.
|
5
|
|
The
first to fourth of the Ten commandments are commandments to love God.
And
the fifth to tenth is the commandment for neighbor's love.
The
first commandment of neighborly love is about parental respect.
|
6
|
|
This
fifth commandment has another characteristic.
God
said that all commandments from the 6th to the 10th commandments "do
not".
The
fifth commandment, however, was spoken with the command "to
do(Honor)".
|
7
|
|
The
word "honor" means that you honor it with honesty.
God
has promised to give a special reward to those who are gracious to their
parents.
It
is a promise that you will live long in the land and bless you.
Let's
read together the words of Deuteronomy 15:16
¡°But
if he says to you, 'I will not go out from you,' because he loves you and
your
household,
since he is well-off with you,¡° (Dt 15:16, ESV)
|

|
|
Among
the characteristics of people who have lived as a great believer, it is not
difficult to
find
in the Bible that they have a heart to honor their parents.
|
9
|
|
Jesus
who came as our Savior also wrote in the Bible that he had honored his
parents with
all
his heart in his childhood.
Let's
read together Luke 2:51.
¡°And
he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And
his
mother
treasured up all these things in her heart.¡±(Lk 2:51, ESV)
|
10
|
|
David,
who was a great king, is also a representative of his parents.
David
's father Jesse gave David an errand to bring food for his brothers. David's
brothers
were
at war with the Philistines. David's father told him to go on an errand for a
terrifying
battlefield.
|
11
|
|
What
did David do when he heard his father?
David listened to
his father's words and left his work to another shepherd early in the
morning.
David
is the one who has done his best to obey his Word. Let us read aloud 1(one)
Samuel
17:20.
¡°And
David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the
provisions
and went, as Jesse had commanded him.¡±(1Sm 17:20, ESV)
|
12
|
|
Another
person was Joseph, who was established as the prime minister of Egypt.
It
was when Joseph's brothers were called Shechem to care for the sheep.
Joseph's
father Jacob gave Joseph an errand to see if his brothers were well.
|
13
|
|
How
did Joseph respond to his father's words?
Let's
read together Genesis 37:13.
¡°And
Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at
Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." And he said to him, "Here
I am."(Gn 37:13, ESV)
|
14
|
|
Here
the expression Israel is differently called Jacob, Joseph's father.
Joseph
replied that as soon as the words of his father were finished, he would go
straight
away.
You
can see that Joseph also honored his father and obeyed his word.
|
15
|
|
David
and Joseph, who honored and obeyed their parents, were greatly blessed by
God.
Both
of them received all the blessings promised that God would give them to those
who
honor
their parents.
God
made one man king and the other man prime minister.
Through
them, we can know that God's promises are made in their entirety.
|
16
|
|
Parents
are important people who let us know who God is.
Let's
understand the love of God through the love our parents give us.
Through
the way our parents sacrifice for us, Jesus realizes the grace that died on the
cross
to save us.
|
17
|
|
Those
who can not honor their visible parents can not honor their invisible
Heavenly
Father.
We
must live with gratitude for the love and sacrifice our parents have given
us.
From
this day on, you should be more respectful to your parents. Amen!
