Old Testament Panorama

[Luke 24:44]

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

3

The Bible we read is largely divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Do you know how many chapters and bibles are in total?

Based on the Bible, the total length of the Old and New Testaments

is 1,189 chapters 31,101 versus.

4

Of these, the amount of the Old Testament is 929 chapters 23,144 versus.

It corresponds to three-fourths of the whole Bible.

Today we will look at what the Old Testament consists of.

5

There are 39 books in the Old Testament and they are divided into 5 fields.

5 books of the Law, 12 books of history, 5 books of poetry, 5 books of the great prophecy,

and 12 books of the prophecy.

6

The five books of the law are called the Pentateuch, because Moses made them.

The first category, the Law, begins with God's creation of heaven and earth.

After that Adam and Eve broke the promise with God and sin came into the world.

7

God has judged the world that has fallen by sin with water.

And only eight of Noah's family will survive.

People cannot abandon their arrogance, but build up the Tower of Babel against God

and receive great punishment from God.

The punishment was that the language of the people who made the tower became different

from each other. After that, the construction of the tower ceased and people were scattered.

8

And it records the story of four patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, the ancestors of the Hebrew people. Jacob leads 70 men down to Egypt.

Over time the Hebrew nation descended into Egypt, where they live a life of suffering slavery.

9

God saves the Israelites from Egypt through Moses.

But they disobeyed God and did not enter Canaan for 40 years, living in the wilderness.

Numerous events in the wilderness have been recorded in the Old Testament.

10

History records the Canaanite war by Joshua, who became leader after Moses.

The Israelites who settled in Canaan will go through the age of judges ruled by 12 people,

including Samson, Deborah, Gideon and others.

In the days of Judges, there is a repetitive record of people being punished

because they did not serve God rightly, and saved by judges.

11

The Israelites themselves ask God for a king. God has granted them the king.

Saul who disobeyed God.

David, who joined the heart of God.

The story of the kings is unfolded around Solomon who sought wisdom from God.

12

But in the days of King Solomon's son Rehoboam,

Israel divided into two kingdoms of the north and the south.

The south country was called Judah and the north country was called Israel.

There were twenty kings in Judah, the southern kingdom, and nineteen kings in north Israel.

13

Judah and Israel did not live according to God's will at the time the kings ruled.

God sent many prophets to call them to come back to God, but they did not listen.

Most of the prophets are written by the prophets who were active in this time and

who have cried out from God.

14

What about Judas and Israel, who did not listen to God's word and did not repent?

Israel in the north was destroyed by the kingdom of Assyria at the time of King Hosea.

Judah in the south was destroyed by Babylon at the time of King Zedekiah.

15

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon will take the people of Judah as captives to Babylon.

Israel will be in captivity for 70 years.

Daniel and his three friends, including the story of the captivity, are Daniel and Ezekiel.

16

The people of Judah who were taken captive to Babylon will return to Judah

after 70 years, as God promised.

When they return to Judah again, they rebuild the ruined temple and walls.

The records are written in the Bible of Ezra and Nehemiah.

17

Representative prophets who preached the word of God to people at this time are Haggai

and Malachi. The Old Testament ends with these prophets preaching the word of God.

The Bible does not speak for 400 years during the interim period

until the Old Testament and the New Testament era are held.

So we call this period the middle age of the Old and New Testaments.

18

The  begins with the creation of the heaven and the earth,

and helps us know what God has done in history.

The Old Testament writes about the coming Jesus. We, being saved and being children

of God, should not neglect to read and learn the Old Testament.

So you will have to learn and study God's Word more diligently.
