Title

1

God who punished the people of Abimelek and Shechem

2

[Judges 9:53]

a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.

3

God gave Gideon with 300 soldiers to defeat Midian and liberate Israel.
The people thought Gideon had saved them and asked Gideon to be their king.
Gideon refused, saying, "The only king is God.¡°

4

Gideon refused to be king, but he received much gold from the people.
Then he made a big mistake of making an ephod from the gold and hanging it in his home.
The people who had to return to God fell into the sin of serving the gold ephod like an idol.

5

Gideon also had many wives, so he had 70 sons. In addition to his wife,

he had a concubine in a place called ¡°shechem¡±.

The concubine's son's name was Abimelek.

6

Abimelek had a desire to take power after his father Gideon.
So he went to Shechem and said to his mother's family: ¡°Ask Shechem's leaders,

'Would it be good for Jerub-Baal's seventy sons to rule over you, or only one to rule over you?' Don't forget that I am your relative.¡± Abimelek asked to help him become king.

7

Upon hearing Abimelek's words, his uncles went out and delivered Abimelek's words

to the leaders of Shechem. Upon hearing Abimelek's words, the leaders of Shechem

thought that Abimelek's power would be beneficial to them.

So they said, "Abimelek is our brother.¡°

8

Shechem's leaders gave 70 silver shekels to help Abimelek do their work.
Abimelek saved several thugs with the money.
The bully who received the money followed as Abimelek's men.

9

Abimelek led them to Gideon's hometown of ¡°Ophrah¡±.

Abimelek had Gideon's 70 sons gather in a large rock.

Then there was a terrible evil deed that killed them all.
'There was only one son named Jotham who survived there without dying.

10

After this, all the leaders of Shechem and Millo gathered near the stone pillars at Shechem.
Under the big tree, they made Abimelek their king.
They sinned to make Abimelek their king, whom God had not permitted.

11

Shechem's leaders served Abimelek as king for three years.
But their union, which began with greed, did not last long.
Conflicts broke out between Abimelek and Shechem's leaders, and eventually Shechem's leaders betrayed Abimelek. This is because God did not let the wicked live well.

12

The leaders of Shechem set up a man named Gaal as their new leader.
Gaal said he would drive Abimelek out, and he said he would lead the army and fight Abimelek.

13

But Shechem's leader, who was listening to Gaal, was Abimelek's follower, Zebul.
He shared this with Abimelek.
Abimelek's army moved in the middle of the night and attacked Gaal's army the next morning.
Gaal's army was defeated without even trying.

14

Several cities of Shechem were captured by Abimelek.
The Saint Thebez was captured by Abimelek.
The people of Thebez Castle hid from Abimelek with a solid tower.
They locked the tower's door and went up to the roof.

15

Abimelek began to attack the tower. Abimelek slowly approached the door to light the tower.
A woman looking at this from the roof of the watch tower threw the upper of two millstones towards Abimelek.

16

The upper of the two millstones that the woman threw fell on Abimelek exactly.
Abimelek, hit by a millstone, had a broken head.
Abimelek was so embarrassed that he killed his sword by asking his men to kill him.

17

God punished the evil Abimelek through the hand of a woman.
God punished him for the sin of killing 70 brothers with the desire to be king.
In addition, the people of Shechem who had joined Abimelek's evil plan were also punished.

God knows all the evil things we do. He shows His holiness by punishing those who do evil.
As children of God, we must acknowledge that God knows all my actions and try not to do what God hates in any situation.
