God Promises the New Covenant

2

Bible verse : Jeremiah 31:33 (NIV)

"This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,"
declares the LORD.
"I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God,
and they will be my people.

3

The Israelites are the people who received special love from God.
God loved Israel and freed them from slavery in Egypt.
And He did something special for them in the wilderness of Sinai.

4

God made a covenant with the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai.
The commandments of God to be obeyed by the Israelites were engraved directly on two stone tablets and given to them.
The Israelites firmly promised to live according to the commandments given by God and entered into a covenant with God.

5

God was always with Israel, the people of the covenant, and protected them.
God provided them with manna for 40 years so that they could live well in the wilderness and provided what they needed.
Also, God defeated all the enemies of the Israelites.

6

The Israelites arrived in Canaan as promised by God. God helped Israel, the people of the covenant, to win the war against all the nations living in the land of Canaan.
God gave land to the 12 tribes of Israel so that they could live in Canaan.

7

However, as time passed, the Israelites began to break the covenant with God.
They broke their promise to God and started doing things that God hates.
They betrayed God by worshiping idols in Canaan as their gods.
The Israelites themselves broke the covenant with God.

8

The Israelites who broke the covenant with God suffered greatly from neighboring countries. They sought God again in the midst of suffering.
Each time, God gave them love and made them recover again.
God never broke the covenant he made with the Israelites and kept them.

9

However, as time passed, Israel did not keep the covenant with God and acted recklessly. They did not stop worshiping idols. They lost the look of love that God's covenant people should have, and those with power harassed the weak.
God couldn't be with them.

10

Because of their sins, northern Israel was destroyed by the country of Assyria. Southern Judah was not very different from northern Israel.
They too distanced themselves from the covenant with God. The sins of idolatry abounded in the land. They loved neither God nor their neighbors.
The prophet Jeremiah prophesied that God would punish those who refused to obey God's Word.

11

As prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah, southern Judah was destroyed by Babylon. God's temple was completely destroyed.
The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon. The people of Judah who broke the covenant with God had to pay a very high price.
They are no longer hopeless.

12

But God's love for the people of the covenant was great and amazing.
Before Judah was destroyed, God prophesied a message of hope that the Israelites would be restored through the prophet Jeremiah. The content was that they would return to Judah after 70 years of captivity in Babylon.

13

Prophet Jeremiah's prophecy came true 70 years later. They returned to Judah and rebuilt the destroyed temple. And they rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem.
God's promise was kept without any deviation.

14

God also gave another prophetic word through the prophet Jeremiah.
It was the word that God would establish a new covenant because the Israelites abandoned the covenant they had made in the past.
["The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, "
declares the LORD. "
This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
(Jeremiah 31:31-33)]

15

Unlike the previous covenants that were inscribed on tablets of stone, the new covenant God establishes is engraved on each person's heart.
The people who receive the word of this covenant in their heart will forever become the people of God. Because God will be their God forever.
The new covenant given through Jeremiah has been completely fulfilled for us who believe in Jesus and are saved.
This is because whoever accepts Jesus in their heart will immediately receive the grace of becoming a child of God.

16

The following verse 34 tells of another amazing grace of God given to the people of the new covenant. that all their sins would be forgiven.
[No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying,
'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Jeremiah 31:34)]
This word of promise was fully fulfilled through Jesus.
This is because the moment we receive Jesus into our hearts, we receive the grace of forgiveness of all our sins.

17

Friends who believe in Jesus must be those who wisely use the things God has given to them to please God. When such people later go to heaven and stand before God, they will receive great praise from God.
We need the wisdom of faith to help those in need with the money God gives us and to enrich others with what we can do.
Such a person will later become a man of faith who will be highly praised by Jesus when he enters the kingdom of heaven.
