The
Report of Saul¡¯s Death
2
For David had
said to him, ¡°Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against
you when you said, ¡®I killed the Lord¡¯s anointed.¡¯ ¡°
[NIV]
II
Samuel 1:16
3
Saul had lived his life as
he hated David.
And God hated that
situation.
So Saul passed away with
his three sons on Mount Gilboa.
4
Before David heard of Saul¡¯s death but after David¡¯s victory on Amalek war,
a man came to David and he
fell to the ground to pay him honor.
5
David asked the man,
¡°Where are you
coming from?¡±
He answered, ¡°I have escaped from
the Israelite camp.¡±
6
¡°What happened?¡± David asked. ¡°Tell me.¡±
7
He said,
¡°The Israelites have
lost and have fled from the battle.
Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.¡±
8
As David heard this, he
asked him surprisingly,
¡°How do you know
that Saul and his son Jonathan are really dead?¡±
9
He replied, ¡°I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,¡± and there was
Saul, leaning on his spear. The Philistine soldiers were coming to Saul, and
then he said to me, ¡°I am about to die, please kill
me so that I don¡¯t have to suffer anymore
in agony!¡±
10
¡°So, I killed him
because he looked that he was about to die.
And I took the crown that
was on his head and the band on his arm and brought them here. Please take
them.¡±
11
Then David and all the men
with him took hold of their clothes and torn them.
They mourned and wept and
fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan.
12
David asked him,¡± Where are you
from?¡±
and he said, ¡°I am the son of an
alien, an Amalekite,¡±
13
Then David said to him,
¡°You killed the Lord¡¯s anointed.
You were not even afraid to do it. You are not safe here.¡±
14
The man was confused
because he thought that David would be happy to know of Saul¡¯s death since he hated David. That¡¯s why the man killed and brought the
goods of Saul¡¯s because he imagined that
he would get a great award.
15
David said to his men, ¡°Drag this man out
and strike him down.¡±
A man in an absurd dream
died because he wanted to get an award at the other¡¯s expense.
16
Though Saul really hated
and tried to kill David, David was sad to hear Saul¡¯s death because he knew that Saul was anointed by God. Thus,
David couldn¡¯t forgive a man who had
killed Saul.
17
As we see David¡¯s life, he usually was a faithful man
to God without thinking of his own situations. Thus, God loved David a lot
and God allowed David¡¯s sons to be kings of Israel. We need to change our thoughts and mind to be more like David in the Bible. It
means not acting upon our own desires but God¡¯s will and vision for us. Therefore, I want you to think and
find God¡¯s plans for your life, so
that you too can follow and walk with God.
