The Holy Spirit
poured out at Cornelius¡¯s house
2
¡°Can anyone keep
these people from being baptized with water?
They
have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.¡±
(Acts 10:47)

In the house of Cornelius
who was the centurion of the Italian Regiment, people started gathering.
4
¡°Today Peter who was
with Jesus will come here.¡± Then the people replied, ¡°Really? It seems like a dream to meet Peter.¡±
5
Cornelius, the centurion
was very excited to wait for Peter and he said, ¡°How should I
welcome Apostle Peter?¡± Even though, Cornelius was a
centurion with a hundred soldiers, he was still nervous to meet the Apostle
Peter in his house for Peter was a man who had been with Jesus.
6
¡°The Apostle Peter
has arrived.¡± As soon as Cornelius heard of it, he
ran to meet him and fell at his feet in reverence.
7
But Peter made him get up
and said, ¡°Don¡¯t do this; I¡¯m only a man myself.
8
A lot of people had
gathered together. Peter said, ¡°You are all well aware that it is against
our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or even to visit him. However,
God has told me to come here and I want to obey God¡¯s word. Anyway, why do
you call me?¡±

¡°Four days ago I was
in my house praying, a man stood before me and said, ¡°Go to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is in the house of
Simon the tanner.¡± Then people said, ¡°It is good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of
God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.¡±
10
Peter acknowledged God¡¯s
desire to preach the gospel to all man so he began to speak to Cornelius¡¯s
family and people there about God¡¯s kingdom. Peter said, ¡°I now realize how
true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every
nation. God wants me to speak the message of God to everyone.¡±
11
After that, the apostle
Peter started to preach the gospel. ¡±Jesus went around doing wonders and healing
all who were under the power of evil for God was with him.¡±
12
¡°Though Jesus was
pure and sinless, the high priests and the secretaries accursed Jesus of
doing wrong to the Roman soldiers. And they killed him by hanging him on a
tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day.¡±
13
¡°After Jesus rose
from the dead, I ate with him. He commanded us to preach to the people and
testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of
sins through his name and goes to heaven.¡±
14
While Peter was still
speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The
circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished to see this
scene. Also they were surprised that the Holy Spirit had been poured out even
on the Gentiles. The people who had received the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues
and praised God. It was amazing.
15
Then Peter said, ¡°Can anyone keep
these people from being baptized with water? All of you should be baptized in
the name of Jesus Christ.¡±
16
Peter baptized people who
were there and they were glad and moved
by the grace of God.
17
Peter stayed with them for
a few days and told them more about
who Jesus was. Thus, they
were blessed during that time.
18
As we see people, we see
only the appearance of people but God does not have favoritism between Jews
or Gentiles. God wants to save all of us. As you have heard today¡¯s story, I
want to encourage you to tell the gospel to the people all around you. For
the message from God today, we need not to distinguish people in our own
sight because God does not discriminate nor ignore people. If we distinguish
between others, it¡¯ll be disobedience. Therefore, I want to suggest to all of
you to meet Jesus and to believe in Him sincerely.
