Elijah
at the Kerith Brook
2
So he
did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.
The
ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the
evening, and he drank from the brook. [1 Kings 17:5-6]
3
From among the kings of Israel, there was a king named
Ahab.
King Ahab married Princess Jezebel of a
neighbor King Sidon who worshiped idols.
4
King Ahab obeyed the words of Queen
Jezebel better than the words of God. So, he didn¡¯t worshiped God and he
began worshiping the idol called Baal.
5
King Ahab came to make a very big temple
of the idol Baal at Samaria which is the capital of North Israel. King Ahab
told the people not to worship God but to worship Baal.
By the order of King Ahab, the people began
to worship Baal instead of God.
6
Not only that but, Ahab made the idol
called Asherah and worshiped it. Until now, from among the kings of Israel, Ahab became a king who displeased God.
God became very angry upon seeing the bad
deeds of Ahab.
7
Upon seeing such bad doings of King Ahab,
a very courageous prophet came to King Ahab.
That prophet was Elijah, who was a
Tishbite.
8
The prophet Elijah risked his life and went to King Ahab
and talked to him.
¡°I serve the God of Israel. I oath as Jehovah lives, there
will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my words.¡±
9
Upon listening to Elijah, King Ahab didn¡¯t really believe
that anything bad would happen.
¡°Look, Prophet Elijah, talk as you may. But we will see if
your God whom you believe, truly would not let this land see rain.¡±
10
Ah, but truly an amazing thing occurred;
it didn¡¯t rained on the land of Israel since the words of the Prophet Elijah.
God followed just as the words of Elijah. God accompanied Elijah.
11
In the country where King Ahab governed all the people were
in uproar to seek for water. Just then Ahab realized that the words of Elijah
were true.
¡°Attendants, go right now and get Elijah.¡±
Will Ahab be able to find Elijah?
12
The soldiers searched everywhere but they were never able
to find Elijah.
There was no one who said he have seen
Elijah. Where did Elijah hide himself?
13
God appeared to Elijah when he got out
after he courageously delivered the words of God to Ahab.
¡°Leave here, turn eastward and hide in
the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan and you will drink from the brook.¡±
14
Elijah obeyed the words of God and went to the brook of the
Kerith which is east of the Jordan. And he went there and lived.
There was only water in that place to nourish
him. How will God feed Elijah?
15
The next day, when Elijah woke up and went to the stream, an
amazing thing happened.
Crows had flown to the place where Elijah was staying.
Those crows held bread in their mouths
and delivered them to Elijah.
16
Elijah ate the pieces of bread and drank from the stream. God
sent the crows for Elijah.
Elijah was so thankful for God¡¯s grace.
17
The evening came. In the evening also, the crows that
were sent by God carried the pieces of bread and gave to Elijah.
Elijah was able to have a meal in the
evening also.
18
In the morning and evening, God sent pieces
of bread to Elijah through the crows for him not to be hungry.
God helped Elijah every day for him to be
able to live there.
19
Our God protected Elijah who believed and
followed him. He was not caught by the soldiers of Ahab. Also, God led him to
the Kerith Brook and feed him in an unusual way. He sent the crows to him so
that he could eat, cared for him, and protected him.
20
God whom we believe and God whom Elijah
believed is the same God. And so, when we believe God like Elijah and follow
His words, God will protect and guard us in any place. I hope all of our friends
will also become the people who live everyday enjoying the help of God like
Elijah.
