Samson
Killed a Thousand Men with a Donkey¡¯s Jawbone
2
Finding a fresh jawbone
of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men. Then Samson said,
"With a donkey's jawbone I have made donkeys of them. With a donkey's
jawbone I have killed a thousand men." (Judges 15:15-16)
3
God gave Manoah a child
named Samson.
Samson was a special
person of God.
4
At that time, the
Philistines had harassed the Israelites for forty years.
God called Samson as a
Judge to save the Israelites from the Philistines harassing the Israelites.
5
God commanded Manoah and
his wife never to cut Samson's hair.
They kept God's promise
as God had said.
Samson grew and the LORD
blessed him.
6
While Samson who became
a young man was walking, a lion came out before him. The Spirit of the LORD
came upon him in power.
He tore the lion apart
with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat.
7
Samson had married a
Philistine woman in Timnah.
The Philistines went up
and burned her and her father to death.
Samson who heard the bad
news was very angry.
8
So he attacked the
Philistines and killed many people.
After that Samson stayed
in a cave in the rock of Etam.
9
The Philistines went up
with many people and came to attack the Israelites. The men of Judah asked,
"Why have you come to fight us?" The Philistines said, "We
have come to take Samson prisoner," they answered, "To do to him as
he has done to us."
10
The men of Judah were
afraid of the Philistines.
They said to him, "We've
come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines." Samson said,
"Swear to me that you won't kill me yourselves."
11
"Agreed," they
answered.
"We will only tie
you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you."
12
So they bound him with
two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
The Philistines came
toward him shouting. There were many Philistines there.
13
The Spirit of the LORD
came upon him in power.
The ropes on his arms
became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands.
14
Finding a fresh jawbone
of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.
Then Samson said,
"With a donkey's jawbone I have made donkeys of them.
With a donkey's jawbone
I have killed a thousand men."
15
Samson was very thirsty,
so he cried out to the LORD,
"You have given
your servant this great victory.
Must I now die of thirst
and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?"
16
Then God opened up the
hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it.
When Samson drank, his
strength returned and he revived.
So the spring was called
En Hakkore, and it is still there in Lehi.
17
God is Almighty. God
could help Samson to attack a thousand men.
A person used by God can
accomplish great things that we cannot even imagine.
18
We are also special
children of God and can be used by God like Samson. Therefore we should
always act like God's children and try to keep God's words.
