Jesus Calms the Storm

(Matthew 8: 26~27)

He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

In Israel, there is a big lake called Galilee.
The people called it the Sea of Galilee because of how big the lake was!

Jesus taught God's words in many areas around the sea.
Jesus suggested to the disciples to cross over to the other side.

Then Jesus got into a boat and the disciples followed him.

Jesus was tired, so he began to sleep in the back of the boat.
At first, the sea was calm. The disciples rowed with all their might.

However, when they arrived in the middle of the sea, a strong wind started to blow.
The boat was shaken here and there. The disciples still rowed with all their might.

As time went by, the furious storm became more serious.
Big waves shook the boat and water started to come into the boat.

The water level in the boat was rising.
So they began to worry that the boat might sink into the sea.
Therefore, the disciples were very frightened.

So they woke Jesus up at the back of the boat saying, "Lord, save us! We are going to drown!"

"You of little faith, I am with you; why are you so afraid?" Jesus rebuked the disciples.

Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, "Sea! Be calm!"

As soon as Jesus spoke, it became completely calm. Just a few minutes before,
the sea waves had been raging.
Yet Jesus made the sea calm with only his words.

The disciples could not believe it even though they were with him.
"What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
The men were amazed and could not say anything.

Jesus who is God created the sea himself. So the sea obeyed Jesus.
Jesus is God's son, God who created the world.

The disciples were with Jesus on the boat but they were afraid of the raging waves and the stormy winds.
If they knew that Jesus could calm the sea, they would have been brave and unafraid.

We believe in Jesus and live with him in our hearts.
Therefore, we should not be people who are afraid of difficult things. Unlike the disciples who were afraid of the raging waves.

No matter how hard a problem is, all problems can be solved by Jesus speaking the words.
We should become courageous people that believe in Jesus, the one who can solve our problems.
