Pride Tower on Shinar Plain

2

(Genesis 11:7-8)

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

3

During the time of Noah, God sent a huge flood and by the flood, 8 members of Noah's family became the only ones left in the world.

4

A long time passed after the flood and the three sons of Noah had many children. Through them, many people lived on the earth again. During that time, everyone used only one language so everyone understood each other.

5

Among them, there were people moving to the east. On the way, they found a wide plain named, Shinar. They liked that plain very much. So they did not move anymore and they settled there and lived together.

6

In that place, they learned many amazing skills.
Two examples of those skills were making bricks using soil and attaching bricks firmly by using tar.

7

They used bricks in building their houses.
Shortly after, that place turned into a big city.

8

They also built a wall around their city to protect the place where they were living.
As they had skills with bricks, they started making bigger plans.

9

"Everyone, let us build a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves to mark how great we were.
And let us not be scattered and live together forever."

10

Rather than lifting up the name of God, they had arrogant hearts of wanting to lift up their own names. Actually, God had ordered them to spread throughout all of the earth but they did not follow this order. Instead they decided to go against God.

11

They eagerly built the tower.
By their skills, their tower became very high.
Their hearts were filled with such arrogance.
They were thinking that they could beat God.

12

God became so angry about the bad things they were doing.
So God came down to look at the city and the tower they had built.
Then, God decided to punish them.

13

God said, "They are one people and their language is the same, so they started doing this thing but, this is just the beginning of what they are trying to do. If they plan together, they will be able to do anything. Come, let us go down and confuse their language, so they will not understand each other."

14

God spoke and made everyone speak a different language. So, the people were not able to work together anymore. Without any choice, they stopped building the tower. Some people understood each other but some did not. The people who could understand each other gathered together and scattered all over the earth.

15

They were no longer able to build the tower. We call this tower, The Tower of Babel.
The Tower of Babel lets us know that God really hates arrogant hearts.

16

They had good skills for building and making bricks but they used their skills in doing things that God hates, so God punished them by confusing their language. God is not pleased when people use their abilities with arrogant hearts.

17

Jesus had amazing powers and Jesus used that power in doing things that pleased God.
We should learn from Jesus.
We should become faithful people of using our skills and abilities for God.
If we do that, God will raise us up and bless us more.
