Obadiah
Saved One Hundred Prophets
2
I Kings 18:3-4
and
Ahab had summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of his palace. (Obadiah was a
devout believer in the LORD. While Jezebel was killing off the LORD'S
prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves,
fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)
3
Among the kings of
Israel, there was King Ahab. This King Ahab was very evil in front of God and
the one who made King Ahab do those evil things was no other than Jezebel,
the Queen.
4
Jezebel was a
daughter of Ethbaal, the king of the Sidonians.
King Ahab told the Israelites to throw away God and made them serve Baal and
Asherah, the idols of Sidon.
5
For the people to
serve Baal and Asherah, the king made temples all over the country. The
Israelites should have worshipped God and God only but they were scared of
King Ahab and Jezebel so more and more Israelites started to serve Baal and
Asherah.
6
Jezebel wanted all of
the Israelites to leave God and serve Baal and Asherah so she made a very
terrible plan. That plan was to kill all of the prophets that served God.
7
Jezebel secretly
ordered the soldiers. "Find all the prophets that serve God and kill
them.
They are no good for our country. They are just a bother in serving our
Baal."
8
Obadiah, who took
care of the palace, heard about this terrible plan. Obadiah took care of the
palace of this evil King Ahab but he was a very faithful man who served God
very well.
9
Obadiah wanted to
help the prophets.
Obadiah secretly sent messages to the prophets and gathered them in a place
that he prepared.
10
100 prophets gathered
by the call of Obadiah.
Obadiah hid them in two caves.
11
Vast blood was shed
around the land of Israel because of the evil deed of Jezebel. Many prophets
who were not able to get away, were killed by the soldiers of Jezebel. To
stop the Israelites from believing God, the evil Queen Jezebel killed the
innocent prophets of God.
12
But the 100 prophets
that Obadiah helped were kept safely in the caves.
While they were staying there, Obadiah even prepared food for them and kept
them safe.
13
What would have
happened if Jezebel had found out that Obadiah had saved 100 prophets? For
sure, Obadiah would have faced death. But God helped Obadiah.
14
During that time, the
people who worked in the palace of King Ahab were very afraid of him, so they
just threw God away. But even in the palace of King Ahab, Obadiah did not
lose his faith and served God very well.
15
Obadiah was not
afraid of King Ahab and Jezebel, who had the greatest power but instead, he
was afraid of God, who is the owner of this world and who is absolutely much
stronger than anyone. That is why Obadiah was able to do what makes God
happy.
16
We confessed that we
believe Jesus then, became God's children. So, we should work hard to become
like Obadiah, who had courage and faith. Even if your friends around you are
bad, ask courage from the Holy Spirit to do what makes God happy.
17
Even Joseph and
Daniel, whom we respect, made God happy in many situations.
If you have good faith just like them, God will lift you up and use you
preciously.
