The
Rich Young Man who Came to Jesus
2
Mark
10:25 (NIV)
"It
is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who
is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
3
There was a rich
young man.
This young man had a question to ask to Jesus.
4
One day, this man
heard that Jesus was coming so he went to the place where Jesus was.
He fell on his knees before Jesus. What made him so curious?
5
This rich young man
asked this question, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?" He was concerned about how to be saved.
6
After this young man
asked, Jesus answered, "Keep all the commandments given by God."
7
The rich young man
asked again. "Which commandments are you talking about?"
8
Jesus
answered him.
"You
shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you
shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and love your
neighbor as yourself."
Jesus
was telling him to keep the 10 commandments.
9
No
sooner had Jesus spoken that he replied, "Teacher, all of these I have
kept since I was a boy.¡± This man's face was full of joy. He believed that he
could be saved since he kept all of the commandments.
10
However,
Jesus looked at him and said,
"One
thing you lack, you are rich. Sell everything you have and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
11
At
this the man¡¯s face fell because he thought he could be saved since he keep
the commandments. He could not talk anymore about what Jesus had said so he
went away sad, because he had great wealth.
12
This
young and rich man wanted to have eternal life but he did not want to obey
the words of Jesus to sell everything he had and give to the poor then follow
Jesus because he could not get rid of the greed from his property.
13
Jesus
looked after that young and rich man and said to his disciples,
"Children,
now you know how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter
the kingdom of God."
14
The
disciples were amazed at his words and said, "Jesus, it is difficult for
everyone to leave what they have then, who can be saved?"
15
"So
to be saved could never be done by humans. This can only be done by God. It
can never be taken by humans only the people who are chosen by God can be
saved."
16
Being
saved cannot be done by our own efforts. Money can't buy salvation. Power
can't buy salvation. Being a nice person cannot give you salvation. Salvation
can only be received from the amazing grace of God to people who believe in
Jesus.
17
We
must give thanks to our God who has given us this amazing grace. We got to
value salvation more than everything we have and have faithful hearts to
willingly give up those things for God.
