Let Us be Salt and Light

2

[Matthew 5:16]

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

3

People who believe in Jesus are called Christians. While Jesus was in this world, Jesus told the people how they should live in this world.

4

To the people gathered to listen to the words of Jesus that day, Jesus spoke of how the believers of Jesus should live in this world.
He taught this by comparing Christians to two things, salt and light.

5

Let us read the Bible passage together. Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men."

6

Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth.
This means that the believers of Jesus should be like the role of salt in this world.

7

What kind of role does salt have? Salt is in most of the food we eat.
There is almost no food that does not have salt in it.
The most important role of salt is making the food salty so that it is tasty.
If there is no salt in food, it would be tasteless and tasteless food can be hard to eat.

8

Salt also has a role for storing food. When fish or meat is soaked in salt, it does not rot and we can store it for a long time. In addition to this, salt is also used to preserve our lives.

9

Jesus told us to be like salt. This means that wherever believers of Jesus go, they should serve other people who really need the help.

10

Jesus also gave us a warning of what happens when we do not live like salt. "What happens if salt loses its taste? People will throw that salt away."

11

Imagine if salt looses its saltiness. That salt can no longer be called salt. Therefore, that salt will be thrown away and people will step on that salt as they pass by.

12

It¡¯s like, when believers of Jesus do not behave rightly in this world. When we do not live righteously and people do not appreciate us, people will criticize us and insult the believers of Jesus. Therefore, we should always work hard to follow the words of God so we will not be treated uselessly.

13

Jesus also called us the light of the world. Light has a role of lighting up the darkness.
No matter how dark it is, if light enters, the darkness goes away and it becomes bright.

14

Even a town on a very high mountain, if light is there, people from far away can easily know that there is a town on that mountain. Just like this, light can be seen by every person.

15

No one in this world lights a lamp and hides it secretly.
If we turn on a lamp, we put it on a lampstand,
so that it will light the whole room.

16

Jesus tells us that believers of Jesus should be like this lamp light and shine throughout the world. That light is doing good things. When we do good things, people of the world will see us and praise the name of God and glorify God.

17

Today is children's Sunday. I hope all of you in this worship service will become people that play the role of salt and light in this world. I hope all of you will become great people of faith who do good things in any place. Through this, show to your friends that believers of Jesus are different and make them glorify God.
