The Prayer Jesus Taught Us

2

[Matthew 6:9]

¡°This, then, is how you should pray: ¡°¡®Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

3

Jesus taught the disciples how to pray.
Jesus said, "When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,"

4

Hypocrites are people who appear to behave one way, but actually are another. Jesus was telling them that a lot of people who seemed to be faithful were praying hypocritically. Now, let's see what is a hypocritical prayer.

5

First, Jesus said that it is wrong to pray standing on a street corner where many people pass by, in order to show that they pray a lot and therefore seem to be godly.

6

God did not listen to them because they did not pray to God but only wanted to show off to other people. Jesus said that since those people are praised by people in the world, they would not have any prize in heaven.

7

Jesus said that people who truly want to pray should pray in a small room because God listens to our prayers when we are humble.

8

Secondly, Jesus warns us about praying with a repetition of meaningless words. At that time, people thought that God would only listen to them when they spoke a lot, so they would repeat some meaningless words to make the prayer longer.

9

However, Jesus tells us that those prayers are wrong.
"God does not listen because the prayer is long. Do not follow them."

10

¡°Our Father knows what you need even before you pray for it.
Therefore, this is how you should pray.¡±

11

Jesus pointed out these wrong methods of prayer and taught them the model prayer.
This prayer we call, the Lord's Prayer, meaning the prayer that Jesus taught us.

12

Now let's recite together the Lord's Prayer that Jesus told us how to pray.

13

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

14

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

15

Give us today our daily bread.

16

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

17

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

18

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."

19

Today Jesus pointed out the wrong ways in which they were praying by their selfish attitudes. We always need to refrain from praying in the wrong habit. Remember the prayer Jesus taught us and be the faithful ones who pray truly to God who listens to us.
