Jesus, Descendant
of Abraham and of David
|
2
|
|
[Matthew 1:1]
A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the
son of David, the son of Abraham:
|
3
|
|
Matthew chapter 1 is called the
genealogy chapter.
The genealogy is recorded so that we
know who the ancestors are.
|
4
|
|
Many people appear in Matthew chapter
1. This is divided into three parts as follows:
The first part is the fourteen
generations from Abraham to David,
the second part is from the David to
the captivity in Babylon and the third part is from Babylon to Jerusalem,
from captivity to Jesus.

The genealogy of Matthew 1 is
important because it tells us who Jesus our Savior is. Matthew clearly states
that Jesus came to this earth as a descendant of Abraham and of David. Let's
read it together.
(Matthew 1:1) ¡°This is the genealogy
of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham.¡±
|
6
|
|
Jesus came to the earth through the
genealogy of Abraham,
which means that he is the Messiah
sent by God.
Because God said that through the
offspring of Abraham,
everyone in the world would be
blessed.
|
7
|
|
Let's read it together.
¡°I will surely bless you and make
your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the
seashore.
Your descendants will take possession
of the cities of their enemies,
and through your offspring all
nations on earth will be blessed,
because you have obeyed me.¡±(Genesis
22:17~18)
The descendant here means Jesus who
comes as the offspring of Abraham.
|
8
|
|
Abraham had a son named Isaac, and
Isaac had a son named Jacob.
And among his twelve sons, Jacob had
a son named Judas.
Before Jacob's death, he blessed his
12 sons one by one.
|
9
|
|
This is how Jacob blessed Judah.
¡°The scepter shall not depart from
Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to
him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.¡±(Genesis 49:10)
|

|
|
The blessing given to the tribe of
Judah will be a tribe of generations of kings.
This prophecy has been fulfilled. The
first is through the great King David.
King David is from the tribe of
Judah.
|
11
|
|
The second is through Jesus.
Jesus is also from the tribe of Judah
and also the son of David who came to this earth.
For this reason, Jesus is the King of
the universe and eternal King.
|
12
|
|
Among the great prophets of the Old
Testament there was a prophet called Isaiah. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus
would be born
through a pure virgin 700 years
before Jesus was born.
|
13
|
|
In Isaiah 11: 1, he makes this
prophecy,
¡°A shoot will come up from the stump
of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.¡±Jesse, who appears in this
prophecy, refers to David's father.
This means that the king will appear
through the house of David.
|
14
|
|
The Bible says in verse 10 what
things will happen through that king.
(Is 11:10) ¡°In that day the Root of
Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will rally to him, and
his resting place will be glorious.¡±
Eventually, a great ruler who will
rule with peace will come forth from the family of David.
|
15
|
|
The words of this prophecy were fulfilled
precisely.
From the time of King David, the
genealogy included Solomon, Rehoboam, Abijah, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Joram,
Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon and Josiah. Through the time the
Jews were taken into captivity in Babylon, God preserved the house of David.
|
16
|
|
The kingdom of Judah was destroyed by
Babylon and the people taken prisoner because of the sin of departing from God.
But God preserved David's family in Babylon.
And according to Bible prophecy, the
King of Kings was born through Mary,
the wife of Joseph, the descendant of
David's family.
|

|
|
Matthew chapter 1 clearly states that
Jesus came through the genealogy of Abraham and David. Jesus is the one God
promised to send to the earth.
Jesus is the Son of God, He came to
earth in human form to save us from our sins.
We must be sure that Jesus came to
this earth, fully human and fully God.
We must have strong faith so as not
to be shaken by any temptations.
