Jesus healed a man
who was sick for 38 year
2
[John 5:8-9]
Then Jesus said to him, "Get up!
Pick up your mat and walk."
At once the man was cured; he picked
up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a
Sabbath,
3
There was a place called ¡®Sheep Gate¡¯
in Jerusalem.
There was a pond with five pillars in
the vicinity.
It was written in Hebrew, ¡°Bethesda.¡±
4
Here a great number of disabled
people used to gather there the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
5
There was a rumor that there was a
miracle in this pond for a long time.
Once the water in this pond was stirred,
it was rumored that the first person
to enter this pond was cleansed up
whatever the disease was.
6
Many of these sick people were
gathered here with the desire to enter the water first
when the water moved.
They always lived here because they
do not know when the water will move.
7
Jesus came up to keep the feast in
Jerusalem, and when he passed through the pond,
Jesus saw one of the sick and
approached him.
8
Jesus knew that this person had been
ill for a long time. He had been ill for 38 years.
Jesus asked him, ¡°Do you want to be
healed?¡±
9
The sick man who had been ill for 38
years told Jesus about his circumstances.
¡°Sir, when the water starts to move,
no one can help me get into the pond.
When I try to get into the water,
someone else goes into the water ahead of me.¡±
10
The sick man had no idea who was
looking at him,
Nor did he know what Jesus was
capable of.
If he knew who Jesus was, he would
not have said this.
11
After hearing the sick man, Jesus
felt compassion for him.
Jesus said to him, ¡°Get up! Pick up
your mat and walk.¡±
What Jesus said would seem absurd to a person who was sick and unable to
move.
12
As soon as Jesus was finished
speaking, a miraculous thing happened.
Until now, the hand and foot of the
sick man could not move.
Suddenly there was strength and power
throughout his body, and he rose from his place.
13
Then he began to walk with his mat
just as Jesus said.
Jesus healed a 38-year-old illness
with a word.
Jesus is the Son of God and is
revealed to be God.
14
Jesus came to this man who had been
ill for 38 years.
Jesus visited the Pond in Bethesda,
where the man lived in hope.
And Jesus set him free from the
disease he had.
15
A few days later, in the courtyard of
the temple, Jesus appeared again to this man.
¡°Behold, now that you are well, do
not sin so that no more evil will come upon you.¡±
He knew then that Jesus was the one
who healed him.
16
The man went to the Jews and
testified.
¡°It is Jesus who healed me. He has
healed me.¡±
With his mouth he made it clear that
Jesus had healed his sickness.
17
Today we learn a great lesson.
We saw that when we meet Jesus, we
can solve any difficult problems.
When a man who had been sick for 38
years met Jesus and did what Jesus said,
the man was miraculously healed of
his sickness.
Therefore, we must live with the
belief that we can experience the miracles God permits
when we always obey God's Word.
