Peter¡¯s Confession of Faith

2

[Matthew 16:16]

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

3

Jesus is the Messiah who came to earth to save us.

From the time Jesus was 30 years old, he preached the gospel of the kingdom for three years.

But at that time people did not know that Jesus was the Messiah.

4

It was time for Jesus to go with his disciples to Caesarea Philippi.

Jesus asked his disciples this question;

"Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

5

Upon hearing the question the disciples told Jesus what they had heard.

"Some say you are like John the Baptist." "Some say Elijah."

"And others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

6

When he heard the disciples, Jesus asked them again. "Then who do you think I am?"

7

Simon Peter replied to Jesus' question. "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God"

The word Christ is like the Hebrew word Messiah, which means "anointed one."

8

Peter correctly said who Jesus is. When Jesus heard Peter's correct confession, he blessed Peter and said: "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven."

9

Jesus tells us that Peter's confession was not his own.

Jesus informed them that God had been gracious to Peter so confessing.

Peter's confession is that God has revealed through Peter that Jesus is the Messiah.

10

Jesus continued to speak.

"And I tell you that you are Peter(The Greek word for Peter means rock),

and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades(hell) will not overcome it."

Jesus declared that he would build a church on Peter's confession of faith.

11

Through this statement, Jesus made clear to them what the Church is.

The Church is a group of people who believe that Jesus alone is the Son of the living God and

that He is the Christ who will save the whole world.

12

Jesus gave more wonderful words to Peter and the Church.

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

13

This statement of Jesus tells us that the church has the authority which was built on Peter¡¯s confession of faith.

God is with the church which was built on the right confession of faith.

Through this church God calls people to preach the gospel to the world and encourage them to believe in Jesus.

14

Then Jesus ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

15

Then Jesus began to tell His disciples in detail what His future would be like.

16

Jesus, the Christ, went up to Jerusalem and suffered and died because of the elders,

the chief priests, and the scribes.

And he told them that he would be raised again in three days after he died.

17

Through the confession of Peter, God proclaimed who Jesus is.

Jesus went the way of Christ, died, and was resurrected to become our true Redeemer, according to this confession.

It is the greatest blessing in the world that we confess Jesus for our salvation and become a member

of God's church. I hope that you and I will be children of the Lord who are blessed and build up our faith through the church built on the right confession of faith.
