Give Me This Mountain!

[Joshua
14:12]
¡°Now
give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself
heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and
fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.¡±

Moses
was the leader who led the Israelites out of Egypt with the help of God.
Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of Israel, was the leader who
conquered the promised land of Canaan.
|
4
|
|
Under Joshua's leadership, Israel
fervently conquered the land of Canaan. After entering Canaan, they conquered
most of the land through seven years of war.
God commanded Joshua to distribute the conquered lands to each tribe.
|
5
|
|
Joshua did his best to distribute the
land equally according to God's word. Eleazar the priest and the chieftains
of each tribe carried out this work together. They decided to distribute the
land by lot, which God commanded.

One day a man named Caleb from the
tribe of Judah came to Joshua.
Caleb told Joshua what God had promised him in the past.
¡°You too will remember what Jehovah said in Kadesh-barnea.¡±

|
|
So the Old Testament law says: ¡°Do
not swear falsely. You must keep your oath to the Lord.¡± This verse tells
us not to make an oath that we cannot keep.
If you make an oath, it is a teaching that you must keep it.

Caleb began to tell Joshua what had
happened in Kadesh-barnea.
Kadesh-barnea is where Moses sent 12 spies to conquer Canaan.
Caleb was one of the twelve spies.
|
9
|
|
The 12 spies who looked into Canaan
reported to Moses and the people to Kadesh-Barnea. 10 out of 12 said that the
people of Canaan were too strong and their cities were so strong that they
could never conquer them. Upon hearing these reports, the Israelites were
greatly disappointed and wept loudly.
|
10
|
|
At that time, there were two spies
who said that if God was with them, they could conquer Canaan. One of them
was Joshua and the other was Caleb. Joshua and Caleb spoke boldly in front of
the people.
[If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give
it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.' "Only do not rebel
against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our
bread](Numbers 14:8~9)

About
Caleb's act of faith, God promised through Moses.
[except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and
his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the LORD
wholeheartedly.](Deuteronomy 1:36)
God promised that he would give Caleb the land he had trodden when he entered
Canaan in the future.
|
12
|
|
Caleb was 40 when he received God's
promise. After receiving God's promise, Caleb waited without doubt for 45
years. Now at the age of 85, he came to Joshua to claim the land that God had
promised.
|
13
|
|
Caleb
said to Joshua.
[I am still as strong today as the day
Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was
then. Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You
yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large
and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he
said.]
(Joshua 14:11-12)
Caleb is 85 years old, but he can fight as much as he wants, so he asked for
the land that God had promised.
|
14
|
|
The land Caleb requested was not good
land. It was a land that had not yet been conquered, and was home to the
strong and mighty descendants of Anak. They have very strong castles, so it
is not an easy land to conquer. However,
Caleb requested it with the belief that if God was with him, he could conquer
it.
|
15
|
|
God allowed Joshua to give the land to
Caleb. Joshua prayed his blessing for Caleb and gave Hebron to Caleb. He
believed and waited for the word of God's promise, and Caleb's promise was
fulfilled. God's promise was fulfilled after 45 years.
|
16
|
|
Caleb, who received Hebron, drove out
the Anakites, the giants of the land. He also sent Othniel to attack Kiriath
Sepher and conquer the land. Even though he was 85 years old,
he completely believed in God and followed Caleb, and God was with him, so he
was able to conquer Hebron.
|
17
|
|
God is the one who always keeps the
promises he has made. He kept his promise to send Jesus. The Bible contains
all the promises of Hebron that God wrote directly to us. We must be careful
not to doubt God's promises and act outside of His Word. Like Caleb, if we
believe the word of promise and wait without doubting, He will surely fulfill
the promise. Like Caleb,
I hope that everyone will receive the blessing of fulfilling the word of
promise.
