The love of Jesus that
did not stop even the death of the cross

"Abba,
Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup
from me.
Yet not what I will, but what you will."

Jesus is the Messiah who came to
this earth in a body like ours to save us.
The only way for us to be saved is for the sinless Jesus to die on the cross
for our sins. Jesus already knew that the time was coming when he had to die
on the cross.
|

|
|
Before
going on the way of the cross, Jesus took three disciples, Peter, James, and
John,
to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus said to his three disciples,
¡°My soul is so tormented that I
think I am going to die. Keep awake and pray for me here.¡±
|
5
|
|
Jesus
was afraid to die on the cross. He is the Son of God, but because he has a
body just like ours, he has to feel the great pain of tearing him apart.
But above all else, the greatest pain he
felt was that he had to be cut off from God, his Father, because of the sins
of mankind.
|
6
|
|
Jesus
prayed earnestly to God from a distance from his disciples.
¡°My
father, if you can, take this cup away from me.¡±
Jesus
knew that the way of death on the cross was an unbearable way, and he prayed
to God if he could save mankind through any other way than this way.
|
7
|
|
But
Jesus' prayer did not end there.
¡°But not
my will, but your will.¡±
These
words meant that he was afraid of death on the cross, but he prayed that if
God decided
he had to go that way, he would do it according to his will.

After
the first prayer, Jesus came to the disciples.
Jesus
asked his disciples to pray for him, but they fell into a deep sleep.
Jesus said to his disciples.
¡°Simon, are you sleeping? How can
you not stay awake and pray with me for even an hour?
Watch and pray so that you may not fall into temptation.
The mind wants it, but the body can't!"
After waking the sleeping disciples, Jesus went back to pray.
|
9
|
|
Jesus
prayed with the same content the second time.
¡°My
father, if this cup cannot pass from me, and if I must drink, I pray that
your will be done.¡±
Sweat dripped from his body as he
prayed so earnestly that Jesus prayed.
When his sweat fell to the ground, it became like
drops of blood.
|
10
|
|
When
he came to the disciples after the second prayer, the disciples were still in
a deep sleep. He left the sleeping disciples and went back to praying a third
time to God.
When he
went to the disciples after finishing the third prayer, they were still in a
deep sleep.
|
11
|
|
Jesus
said to his disciples.
"Are
you still sleeping? Are you still resting? That's enough! It's time!
Behold!
The Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise up! Let's go!
Look!
Someone is near to hand me over."
Jesus
knew what was going to happen to him that night.

While Jesus was still speaking,
Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, came to Jesus and kissed
him. When Judas Iscariot kissed Jesus, it was a signal to seize Jesus. As
promised, to those sent by the chief priests, teachers of the law, and
elders, Jesus was arrested without sin.
|
13
|
|
Those who
arrested Jesus took him to the gathering place of the chief priests, elders,
and scribes. They already had all the plans in place to kill Jesus before
even going to trial.
They wanted Jesus to be crucified according to Roman law.
|
14
|
|
The
next day they brought Jesus to Pilate, the governor.
And they used men to threaten Pilate to crucify Jesus.
Pilate knew that Jesus was not guilty of any sin to be crucified. |
But he was afraid of a riot, so he ordered Jesus to be crucified..
|
15
|
|
The
Roman soldiers beat and teased Jesus, who was sentenced to death.
They
made a crown of thorns and put it on Jesus' head. They saluted Jesus and
shouted.
¡°Long live the King of the Jews!¡± The
soldiers struck Jesus in the head with a reed and spat.
|
16
|
|
They led Jesus out to be crucified.
People standing around Jesus who was carrying the cross pointed their fingers
and cursed him. When Jesus arrived at Golgotha, they put him on a cross and
nailed him to his hands and feet. They raised the cross on which Jesus was
crucified.
Jesus did not commit any sin that would have been crucified. When Jesus was
nailed to the cross, He sacrificed His own life to save us.
Even though Jesus knew that He would be crucified and die in great pain, He
tore His flesh and shed His blood for us.
|
17
|
|
Let's
think deeply about Jesus' suffering and death to save us.
Jesus did not save us easily and simply. Before he died on the cross, he had
to go through excruciating agony, pain, and shame.
Although he is God the Son, he was cut off from God the Father and had to die
in complete isolation.
Because without Jesus dying, the problem of our heavy sins cannot be solved.
Whenever
we think of the cross of Jesus, we must think about how heavy our burden of
sin is.
At the same time, we should live a life of
gratitude, believing firmly that all our sins are completely forgiven through
the atonement of Jesus on the cross.
