Every
year, the second Sunday in May is observed as Parents' Sunday.
It is now observed as Parents' Day, but in the beginning it was observed as
Mother's Day.
How did the second Sunday in May
come to be designated as Parents' Day?

In
the small town of Webster, West Virginia, USA, there was a man named Ann
Maria Reeves Jarvis(1832-1905).
This woman
has served as a Bible teacher for her children for over 25 years.
Many children there were
influenced by her teachings.

After Mrs. Jarvis passed away, people
could not forget the love she gave to children and people throughout her
life. So they started having her gatherings to remember her every year.
Jarvis' daughter, Anna Maria Jarvis, was invited to attend this event.
People came to ask Anna to tell her the story of her mother, Mrs. Jarvis.

Anna
passed on to them the words she heard from her mother when she was a child in
Sunday school. ¡°There was a time when my mother told us about the love of
parents at the time.
My mother once gave us a homework assignment while teaching us to honor your parents,
which is the fifth of the ten commandments.¡±

¡°Children,
the Bible tells us to serve our parents well.
It is God's command to us that we should serve our parents well. In the
future,
I hope you all think about how you can express your sincere gratitude for
your mother's great love and devotion, and how you should do it.¡±

¡°Today, thinking of my mother¡¯s
words, as a way of expressing my sincere gratitude,
I will give you the carnation flowers that my mother always liked.¡±
Anna put carnations on the chests of all the mothers who were there. Anna did
the homework that her mother had given her while she was alive to her
grown-ups who had gathered there.

Everyone
who attended the event was very moved.
From that
day on, they set that day every year as a day to thank mothers for their love.
Gradually, this gathering to thank 'Mother's Love' began to spread to nearby churches.
The Mother's Day gatherings that
started in this way have been observed throughout the United States a few
years later.

The church in Korea started to
observe Mother' Sunday in 1930.
After that, May 8, 1955 was declared and observed as Mother's Day by the
Korean government. After that, Mother's Day was renamed to Parents' Day and
celebrated as a day to thank parents for their love.

It
is one of the things that pleases God that we observe Parents' Sunday.
God
directly told us how we should behave toward our parents through the 5th of
the Ten Commandments.
[Honor your father and your mother, so
that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.(Ex
20:12)]

The Heidelberg Catechism, created to
help you better understand the meaning of the Bible,
explains the deeper meaning of the fifth commandment, 'Honor your father and
mother'.
Let's read it together.
[That I honor, love, and be loyal to
my father and mother and all those in authority over me; that I submit myself
with proper obedience to all their good teaching and discipline;
and also that I be patient with their failings for through them God chooses
to rule us.]
|
13
|

|
To
keep the 5th commandment well means to serve not only the parents who gave
birth to me, but also all the adults above me, and faithfully obey their
right requests.
Even if they have weaknesses and shortcomings, they should overcome them
wisely without arguing or arguing about them.

David
set an example for those who honor their parents.
When David's father, Jesse, asked
David to play the harp for King Saul, he obeyed.
And in obedience to his father's command to go to the battlefield where his
brothers were, he left home early the next morning to run errands to the
battlefield.
|
15
|

|
King
Saul, whom David served while playing the harp, was jealous of David and
tried to kill him several times. King Saul was a man with a bad defect of
being jealous of David.
David had no choice but to run
away from King Saul.
|
16
|

|
David,
who was running away from King Saul, had an opportunity to kill King Saul.
But David did not kill King Saul.
Saul
was a wicked man with great shortcomings, but David was courteous and
respectful to him until the end, entrusting everything to God, and
persevering.
|
17
|

|
God knew everything David did.
God appointed David to succeed King Saul as king of Israel.
God
exalts and uses those who honor his parents like David.
David became a witness of the
faith that received the blessings of those who honor their parents.
|
18
|

|
[Honor your father and your
mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving
you.(Ex 20:12)]
God has clearly promised that those who honor their
parents will prosper on earth.
I must be polite and respectful not only of the parents who gave birth to me,
but also of the adults I meet.
Then that person will become a person who will receive the blessing that God
has bestowed upon him or her.
