God Gives Samuel to
Hannah
|
2
|
|
So in the
course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son.
She named him Samuel, saying, Because I asked the LORD for him."
(1 Samuel 1:20)

|
|
There
was a man named Elkanah in Ramah in Ephraim.
Elkanah was of the tribe of Levi in Israel.
|
4
|
|
Elkanah had two wives. His first
wife's name was Hannah and the second was Peninnah. Elkanah loved Hannah more
of his two wives.
|
5
|
|
His second wife, Peninnah, bore several
children.
But his first wife, Hannah, had no children. She had a hard day because of
Peninnah, who teased and ignored her Hannah's inability to bear her children.
|

|
|
Elkanah's family had an annual
family event. Every year they went up to Shiloh, where the sanctuary was, to
worship God and make sacrifices.
Elkanah and the whole family offered sacrifices to God with sincerity.
|
7
|
|
After
offering sacrifices to God, everyone ate a meal of joy together as a
sacrifice.
Elkanah distributed the sacrifices to his wife, Peninnah, and her children
according to the fixed portion.
And he divided the good sacrifice twice as much to Hannah, who had no
children.
|

|
|
Peninnah further tormented Hannah,
who was specially loved by husband.
Hannah was so chagrin and anguished that she cried and she hadn't eaten
anything.
Elkanah tried to comfort Hannah, who wept and did not eat her food, but
Hannah's injustice was not resolved.

Hannah went to the temple to tell
God about her troubled heart. Hannah began to pray earnestly to God in the
temple. When Hannah prayed, Eli, the high priest, was sitting on a chair by
the pillar of the temple gate, watching this.
|
10
|
|
Hannah,
who was so distressed, made a promise to God and prayed with a broken heart.
"O LORD of hosts, look on my afflictions. Remember me. Do not forget me.
If you give me a son, I will give him and all his life to the LORD, and let
no one put a sword on his head." Hannah promised God that if God gave
her a son, he would dedicate the life of that son to living for God.
|
11
|
|
Hannah
prayed to God with all her strength in her heart without speaking out of her
mouth.
When High Priest Eli saw Hannah with her mouth moving but her voice was not
heard, he mistakenly thought that her Hannah was praying with her
drunkenness.
So
he turned to her praying Hannah and said, ¡°How long are you going to stay
drunk?
Stop her wine.¡± He scolded her.
|
12
|
|
Hannah
said to Eli.
"No.
Priest, I do not drink wine or alcohol. I was in great distress and was
pouring out my heart to Jehovah. I'm not a bad person. I am praying because I
am so distressed and sad.¡±
|
13
|
|
After
hearing Hannah's words, the high priest Eli blessed her. "Go in peace.
May the God of Israel grant you what you want." After receiving the
blessing of Eli the priest, Hannah brought great peace to her heart.
Hannah
replied to Eli, ¡°Have mercy on me as your maidservant.¡±
|
14
|
|
Hannah,
who prayed for her situation to God, returned to the place where her family
stayed with a peaceful heart. And she ate the food that she could not eat
because she was so sad because of Peninnah. There was no longer a sad look on
her Hannah's face.
|
15
|
|
Elkanah and the whole family left
Shiloh and returned to the house of Ramah. And not long after,
a miracle happened that Hannah became pregnant.
God remembered Hannah's prayer and answered her prayer.
|
16
|
|
Hannah
gave birth to a son. Hannah named her son Samuel, meaning
¡°I asked the Lord and got it.¡±
After
Samuel was weaned, she took him to the priest Eli and said to him.
¡°Priest, I swear I am the woman who stood near you and prayed to the Lord.
I prayed for her to have a child. Jehovah answered my prayer and gave me this
child.
Now I give this child back to Jehovah. She said that this child will be a man
of Jehovah for the rest of his life.¡±
Hannah
kept her promise to God. Hannah's son Samuel later became the great leader of
Israel, succeeding Eli as high priest.

|
|
Hannah
was a woman who suffered greatly from Peninnah because she had no children.
She had
her own difficult situation and prayed to God.
God heard her prayer and gave her son.
God is pleased to solve the
difficulties that His children face.
Like Hannah, we should have a good faith habit of praying to God when we are
faced with difficult times. God hears our prayers and gives us the best.
