The Amalekites Who Falsely Delivered King Saul's
Death
|
2
|
|
¡°What
happened?" David asked. ¡± Tell me. ¡° He said, ¡± The men fled from the
battle.
Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead."
Then David said to the young man who brought him the report,
¡°How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?¡±
(2 Samuel 1:14-15)

There
was a great war between Israel and the Philistines on Mount Gilboa.
King
Saul and his three sons participated in the war together, but they lost the
war.
King Saul's three sons were also killed by the Philistines.

|
|
The Philistine soldiers, who had
gained momentum, fired arrows and attacked Israel.
One of the arrows they shot hit King Saul. King Saul, badly wounded by an
arrow shot by the Philistines, asked his men with his weapons to kill him.

|
Hearing King Saul's words, his
subordinate could not kill the king he was serving.
So King Saul put a knife to his stomach and threw himself over it to death.
Seeing this, Saul's man also threw themselves on his own swords and died
along with the king.

|
King Saul, who met a tragic end on
Mount Gilboa, was destroyed because of envy.
He could not overcome his evil envy toward David, who was loyal to him and
was mighty in battle. He made every effort to kill David, but he could not
kill David, who was with God, and he died first.

On the third day after Saul's
death, a young man came to David's place.
The young man ripped his clothes and put dirt on his head, and in sorrow he
bowed down before David. David asked the young man. ¡°Where are you coming
from?¡±
The young man ¡°is the way out of the camp of Israel.¡± answered.
|

|
|
Upon hearing this, David continued
to ask him. ¡°What happened? Tell me.¡±
The young man said, ¡°People fled the battlefield, and many died.
Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.¡±
|

|
|
Upon hearing that King Saul and
Jonathan, whom David loved so much, were dead, David asked the young man
again, ¡°How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?¡± After
receiving David's question, the young man began to tell David about the
situation.

|
|
¡°I happened to go up Mount Gilboa,
and I saw Saul lying on his spear.
The Philistines were approaching Saul in several chariots.
Saul looked back and he saw me and called. So I answered. 'I'm here!'
|
11
|
|
Saul
asked me, 'Who are you?' 'I am an Amalekite,' I answered.
Then Saul said to me, 'Come here and kill me. My pain is so great that my
life is not taken away,'
he said. So I got close to him and killed Saul. Because Saul was so badly
wounded that there was no hope of surviving.
|
12
|
|
The young man presented the evidence
that he had killed King Saul before David and said,
¡°Then I took the crown off Saul's head and took the bracelet off his arm. My
lord, I have brought them."
|

|
|
This
young man told David that he had killed Saul, but he told David a lie that
did not match the actual death of Saul.
This young man must have thought that David would be happy when he told the
news of the death of Saul, who hated David all his life. And he had lied to
David about something he hadn't even done, with the calculation that David
would give him a great reward.
|
14
|
|
When David heard the news of the
deaths of King Saul and Jonathan, he tore his clothes and mourned. All those
who were with David tore their clothes.
They wept over the death of Saul, his son Jonathan, and the people of Israel,
the people of the Lord, by the sword. And they didn't eat anything until the
night.
|

|
|
This young man came to see David with a
profound misunderstanding. David had a painful and difficult time because of
King Saul. David had two chances to kill King Saul.
But David did not kill King Saul. David feared the God who had made Saul
king. However, this young man who came to David today lied that he had killed
King Saul and acted wickedly to get some profit.
|
16
|
|
David blamed the young man who said he
had killed King Saul with his mouth and said to him.
¡°Why were you not afraid to kill the man whom the Lord anointed?¡±
Then David ordered that the young man who had murdered God's anointed king of
Israel be put to death. The young man died that day because of his lies.
|
17
|
|
David
did not know that the young man was lying. But God, who judges sin fairly,
knew it all. And God punished David for his sins. God was not deceived by his
lies, and the young man was punished for his sins.
Today's Word gave us a realization that
we can deceive people, but not God.
We, who believe in Jesus and become children of God, forget that God is
listening and watching when we say or do something. should not be In any
case, we must become people who speak and act truthfully without lying before
God.
