Do not take God's name
in vain!

[Exodus 20:7~8]
"You
shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, or the LORD will not hold
anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

The
Ten Commandments that God has given us are precious commands that we as
children of God must keep forever.
God has promised to bring great blessings to those who keep the Ten
Commandments.
Today, we would like to consider the meaning of the third commandment of the
Ten Commandments.
|
4
|
|
First, let's read the third
commandment of the Ten Commandments together.
[You shall not misuse the name of the
Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his
name.](Exodus 20:7)
|
5
|
|
The third commandment is not to take
the name of God in vain.
The meaning of this is to call God's name thoughtlessly and recklessly.
|
6
|
|
The name of God who created us and
gave us salvation is a precious name that no one should use in vain. We
shouldn't even play around with God's name.
Also, we did not allow the use of God's name for wrong purposes.
[Do not swear falsely by my name and
so profane the name of your God.
I am the LORD.] (Leviticus 19:12)
|

|
|
The name of God can only be called
for work for praise, worship, thanksgiving, and glory.
One day, Jesus healed a man who was paralyzed.
The people brought the paralytic to Jesus lying on a bed.
|
8
|
|
Jesus commanded the man, ¡°Get up,
take your bed and go home.¡±
The paralytic recovered there and returned to his home.
The people who saw the amazing miracles that Jesus performed were greatly
astonished.
|
9
|
|
They saw the wonderful things God
had done there and glorified God.
[When the crowd saw this, they were
filled with awe; and they praised God,
who had given such authority to men.] (Matthew 9:8)
In this way, God's name should not be used in any other place than to exalt
Him.
|
10
|
|
God has said that anyone who takes
His name in vain will be held accountable.
[for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.]
God condemns this sin and judges it.
|
11
|
|
There
was a Philistine general who abused God's name.
The man's name was Goliath. Goliath mocked the Israelites who were serving
God.
This is an insult and mockery of the God of the Israeli army.
|
12
|
|
David heard Goliath curse against
Israel.
David made up his mind to fight Goliath in the name of God.
David took his sling and went out to fight Goliath and cried out in a loud
voice.
[David said to the Philistine,
"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come
against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of
Israel, whom you have defied.](1 Samuel 17:45)
|
13
|
|
David
went out in the name of God to fight Goliath, who used God's name in vain.
God helped David as he went to fight in the name of God. David threw a
slingshot that accurately hit the head of the Philistine general Goliath.
David was victorious by killing Goliath, who spoke the name of God in vain.
|
14
|
|
God judged Goliath's sin of taking
God's name in vain through David.
God was with David who exalted the name of God. God is with those who exalt
God's name and helps him succeed in what he does.
|
15
|
|
The
Bible says how great the sins of those who blaspheme God's name like Goliath
are.
[anyone
who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death.
The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he
blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death.]( Leviticus 24:16)
No one in this world is permitted to use the name of God in vain.
|
16
|
|
We, who believe in Jesus and become
God's children, must not commit the sin of taking God's name in vain.
There are many cases in which the name of God is used in vain in
broadcasting, etc.
As children of God, we must follow them without thinking and avoid sinning.
We must remember that God's name is a noble name that cannot be joked or
laughed at.
|
17
|
|
The third commandment forbids us not to
take the name of God in vain.
We must be careful not to commit sins with our mouths by taking the name of
God in vain.
We should pray for others when they commit the sin of taking God's name in
vain.
As children of God, we should call on the name of God who saved us and
glorify Him.
We must give glory to the God who hears me and directs my path whenever I
pray.
