New Wine in New
Wineskins
|
2
|
|
[Matthew 9:17]
Neither
do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst,
the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.¡±.

On
the way, Jesus called Matthew the tax collector who was sitting at the
customs office.
When Matthew was called by Jesus, he immediately decided to leave what he was
doing and follow Jesus. Matthew welcomed Jesus into his home with his joyful
heart.
|
4
|
|
He prepared a meal for Jesus and
invited many people to the event. At the meal Matthew prepared, other tax
collectors and those who were called sinners in the society ate with Jesus.
|

|
|
The Jews at that time had many special
laws that they set and obeyed. Some of them included not eating with tax
collectors or sinners.
They strictly forbade eating with sinners, as they considered it an offense
to their holiness.
|
6
|
|
When they saw Jesus, who was a
Jew, having a meal with tax collectors and sinners,
they questioned Jesus' disciples.
¡°Why does your teacher dine with tax collectors and sinners?¡±
Jesus heard everything they were saying to his disciples.
|
7
|
|
Jesus answered their question this
way. ¡°The healthy do not need a doctor, the sick need a doctor. What God
really wants is mercy. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.¡±
He taught people that the faith to serve God rightly is not to keep away from
tax collectors and sinners, but rather to have compassion on them and be with
them.

While the story was being told,
there were people who came to Jesus to ask questions about fasting. At that
time, Jews who considered themselves to be godly religious fasted twice a
week, Monday and Thursday.
They expressed their love for God by not eating, which is one of the most
important things for human beings. They viewed this behavior as a sign of
good faith.
|
9
|
|
But Jesus did not tell his
disciples to fast. So, unlike them, Jesus' disciples did not fast at all.
The disciples of John the Baptist thought this was strange and came to ask
Jesus a question.
¡°We and the Pharisees fast often, so why don¡¯t your disciples fast at all?¡±
|
10
|
|
Jesus
answered them in a completely different way. ¡°How can the guests of the
bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.¡±
Jesus referred to himself as the
bridegroom. What Jesus said is that even the Jews did not fast and enjoyed
the wedding ceremony with the groom when the wedding ceremony coincided with
the fasting day they had set.
|
11
|
|
The
reason Jesus' disciples do not have to fast is because they are with Jesus,
the Messiah.
When Jesus came to this earth as the Messiah, a new world was opened.
However, not only the Jews, but also the disciples of John the Baptist made
the mistake of judging the disciples of Jesus because they were bound by the
law before the Messiah came.
|
12
|
|
Jesus explained to them so that they
could easily understand how their actions were wrong.
¡°No one sews a new piece of fabric over an old garment.
If you do, the new piece of cloth will pull on the old garment and tear it
even worse.¡±
|

|
|
David
went out in the name of God to fight Goliath, who used God's name in vain.
God helped David as he went to fight in the name of God. David threw a
slingshot that accurately hit the head of the Philistine general Goliath.
David was victorious by killing Goliath, who spoke the name of God in vain.
|
14
|
|
Jesus gave another example. ¡°New
wine is not put in old wineskins.
If you do, the old skins will burst, spilling wine, and the skins will be
ruined.
New wine must be put in new wineskins. So both can be preserved.¡±
|
15
|
|
When new wine is put into old
wineskins, the new wine ferments and expands, and the old wineskins cannot
withstand it and burst.
However, new wineskins can hold the wine well by withstanding the expansion
of the new wine as it ferments.
He told them that new wine should be put in new wineskins.
|
16
|
|
The Jews did not believe in Jesus even
though they saw the Messiah before their eyes.
They did not try to develop the right faith by learning the new words Jesus
was teaching.
Before Jesus came, they were bound by the old teachings and criticized Jesus
for eating with tax collectors and sinners. They criticized Jesus' disciples
for not fasting.
|
17
|
|
We are people who believe in Jesus, the
Messiah, and have received eternal life.
The saved children of God must act according to the new laws that Jesus
taught.
We should all be zealous in learning the law.
We must act faithfully according to the law. Even when the teachings of Jesus
conflict with others, only when we act according to the new laws that Jesus
taught us, we become people who glorify God.
