King Solomon Falls in
the Sin of Idol Worship
|
2
|
|
The LORD
became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD,
the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep
the LORD'S command.
(1 Kings 11:9-10)
|
3
|
|
After
David, the great king of Israel, Solomon became king.
God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, ¡°Ask for whatever you want.
I will give it to you.¡±
|
4
|
|
Solomon
asked God for wisdom to judge the people justly. God was very pleased to hear
that Solomon asked for wisdom to judge the people justly.
God gave Solomon not only the wisdom he sought, but also many other gifts,
and made promises that he must keep.
[Moreover, I will give
you what you have not asked for-both riches and honor-so that in your
lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you
walk in my ways and
obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a
long life." (1 Kings 3:13-14)]
|
5
|
|
Solomon, who received great favor from
God, became a king who accomplished wonderful things. All of Solomon's
judgments were wise. In any difficult matter, Solomon judged accurately so
that no one was wrong.
|
6
|
|
Israel, ruled by Solomon, became a
truly powerful nation.
The neighboring countries paid tribute to King Solomon and tried to be
friendly.
The kingdom was overflowing with envoys from the kings of neighboring
countries to always hear the wisdom of King Solomon. Israel has become so
strong that no other nation would dare to attack.
|
7
|
|
The greatest thing Solomon did was
to build a temple to worship God. After he built the temple for God to dwell
in, he gathered all the people together and said,
[But your hearts must be fully
committed to the LORD our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands,
as at this time."(1 Kings 8:61)]
When Solomon did what God said, Israel was truly a peaceful and happy nation.
|
8
|
|
But as time passed, Solomon began
to marry foreign women whom God hated.
He broke God's law against marrying foreign women.
["They were from nations about
which the LORD had told the Israelites,
"You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your
hearts after their
gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.
(1 Kings 11:2)]¡±
|
9
|
|
As Solomon grew older, he fell
into more evil things that God hates.
The foreign wives who married Solomon tempted Solomon to worship their idol.
Solomon could not refuse their request, so he served idols.
|
10
|
|
They
served Ashtoreth, the goddess worshiped by the people of Sidon.
They also worshiped the god Milcom, worshiped by the Ammonites.
Solomon built a high place on a hill and allowed his wives to worship idols
there.
Solomon broke his promise to God
and committed evil.
Solomon, like his father David, failed to truly serve God.
|
11
|
|
God
appeared to Solomon, who was doing evil before God.
God warned Solomon against worshiping other gods.
But Solomon did not listen to the word of God.
|
12
|
|
God appeared again in Solomon and
warned him not to worship other gods.
But Solomon did not listen to Jehovah God.
God gave him two chances to repent, but Solomon was proud and did not listen.
|
13
|
|
God told
Solomon that he would punish Solomon for the evil things he did that broke
his covenant with God and did not follow his orders.
¡°I will
take your kingdom from you and give it to your servants.
When your son becomes king, I will divide this kingdom. I will not take the
entire kingdom, but I will
give one tribe to your son for David my servant and for the city I have chosen,
Jerusalem.¡±
God
said that when Solomon's son became king, he would divide Israel into two
kingdoms.
|
14
|
|
After the word of God, nations
that waged war with Solomon began to arise.
Hadad the Edomite got up and began to harass Israel. Also, a man named Rezon
got up and harassed Israel constantly. Because of Hadad and Reson, Israel
suffered greatly.
The reason was that Solomon left God and worshiped idols.
|
15
|
|
God sent the prophet Ahijah to
Jeroboam. Ahijah told Jeroboam that God would take ten tribes from Solomon's
kingdom and give them to Jeroboam to make him king.
Hearing the word of God, Jeroboam rebelled against Solomon and tormented
Solomon.
|
16
|
|
Jeroboam, who rebelled against Solomon,
became the first king of northern Israel after Solomon's death as prophesied
by the prophet Ahijah.
Of the kingdoms that Solomon ruled, except for Judah and Benjamin, 10 tribes
did not follow Solomon's son Rehoboam. As a result of Solomon's forsaking
God, Israel suffered great pain, divided into two kingdoms. The word of God
has been fulfilled.
|
17
|
|
When
Solomon had a right relationship with God, Israel was a happy nation without
war. However, after Solomon did the evil thing of forsaking God and valuing
and worshiping idols more than God, he did not repent, and wars and
rebellions arose.
After Solomon's death, the unfortunate thing happened that the kingdom was
split in two.
It is the same with us who have
believed in Jesus and have been saved.
We must not act like Solomon. If there is something more precious than God,
it is idolatry.
As children of God, we can enjoy true happiness when we obey God's Word and
have a right relationship with God.
