God Gives David a Covenant

but David
went back and forth from Saul to tend his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
For forty
days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his
stand.
(2 Samuel 7:15-16)

After
David became the king of Israel, Israel became a mighty nation. God helped
David to defeat all the enemies around Israel. The country under David's rule
became stable, and David was able to stay in the palace in peace.
|

|
|
However, there was one thing that
made King David uncomfortable. Until then, the temple had not been built, so
the ark of God was not in a building but in a tent. King David thought he
should build the temple of God.
|

|
|
King
David called the prophet Nathan and told him his plan.
¡°I live in
a palace made of cedar wood, but the ark of God is still in the tent.¡±
Upon hearing David's words, Nathan said, "Do as the king wishes.
Jehovah God is with the king.¡±
Nathan thought that God would be
pleased with David's building the temple.
|

|
|
But
that night God appeared to the prophet Nathan and said, ¡°You go and tell my
servant David, ¡®You are not the one to build a temple for me to stay in.¡¯¡±
God did not allow David to build
the temple. Although God did not allow King David to build the temple of God,
God gave David more amazing promises through Nathan.

|
|
Nathan gave the word of God to
David. God first spoke of what God had done to David until now. David was
originally a shepherd who tended sheep in Bethlehem.
God brought David from there and made him the king of Israel. Until David
became king,
he was always with God.
|
8
|
|
God was always with David wherever
he went. Even when he was chased by King Saul,
He was with him and protected him from Saul's hand.
Even when David went to war, God was always with him and helped David defeat
all his enemies.
|

|
|
God promised to continue to be
with David and make him a great man. Because of David, He promised that the
Israelites would be able to live in houses.
God promised David that he would keep the Israelites from being harassed by
the evil people around them so that they would become a strong nation that
would no longer wander about.
|
10
|
|
God promised David an amazing plan
that he had never thought of. God promised to appoint one of David's sons as
king and build the temple with his hands.
And He promised that David's descendants would continue to rule the throne.
|
11
|
|
He
also said that if a person who became king as a descendant of King David
commits a sin, He will be punished for that sin. But He said He would not act
as if He had abandoned King Saul.
And God promised that no matter what, the throne of David's descendants would
not be cut off. Nathan told David everything God had said to him.
|
12
|
|
After hearing Nathan's words, David
went into the tent where the ark of God was and sat down in front of the
LORD. And he offered a prayer of thanksgiving to God. ¡°Jehovah, my lord!
Who am I and what is my family that you take care of so much? Lord! You have
spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is
instruction for mankind, Lord Jehovah!¡±
|
13
|
|
David
also spoke of what God forbade the building of the temple.
[¡°What more can David say to you? For
you know your servant, Sovereign Lord.
For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this
great thing and made it known to your servant.(2 Samuel 7:20-21)]
|
14
|
|
David
never complained about God's decision not to build the temple.
He was grateful for God's promise to build a temple through his son.
He was deeply moved by the indescribable great grace of God, who promised
David that He would ensure that the throne of not only his son but also his
descendants would not be cut off.
|
15
|
|
David prayed that God's promises would
be fulfilled. God fulfilled the promise He made to David today. God allowed
David's son Solomon to build the temple of God.
And since then, the throne of David's sons has not been cut off.
|
16
|
|
What is even more amazing is that the
eternal King who came to this earth to save mankind was born into the family
of David. He is Jesus.
God sent the Son of God to this earth in a human body through the family of
David.
Jesus, who came through David's family, saved the whole world by fulfilling
God's will.
God blessed David's family forever.
|
17
|
|
Because of the promise David received,
we who did not deserve anything were saved.
God is with us who are saved, just as He was with David. Just as all the
promises made to David have been fulfilled, God's promises to His saved
children will be fulfilled 100% exactly.
Those who believe in God's promises and keep their faith to the end will be
honored, just as David was exalted.
