Go and do
like the Samaritan

Bible scripture : Luke 10: 36~37
(NIV)
Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to
the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The expert in the law
replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go
and do likewise.

There
were always a lot of people following Jesus around.
Among
those gathered there were wicked men who tried to embarrass Jesus by asking
him difficult questions.
|
4
|
|
Today,
a scribe stepped forward and asked a question to embarrass Jesus. ¡°Teacher, what must I do to obtain eternal life?¡± Jesus already knew that the man was testing him.
|
5
|
|
After
receiving the scribe's question, Jesus asked the scribe again.
¡°What is
written in the Law, and how did you read it?¡±
|
6
|
|
This
scribe gave a very confident answer. He said, "'Love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all
your mind,' and also, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
|
7
|
|
Jesus
spoke to the man again. ¡°Your
answer is correct, do what you say.¡±
This scribe asked Jesus one
more question. ¡°Then
who is my neighbor?¡±
|
8
|
|
Jesus
told a story in answer to the scribe's question. This is the story Jesus
told.
A
Jew was traveling alone on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho.
|
9
|
|
But
on the way to Jericho, he met a group of robbers on the road.
The
robbers took everything the traveler had.
The robbers even stripped the man of his clothes and left him almost dead.
|
10
|
|
Just
then, a priest who was known to serve God was passing by and found this man
who had collapsed and was dying. But instead of helping this man,
the priest pretended not to
know and ran away on the other side of the road.
|
11
|
|
After some time, another person was coming there.
This man was a Levite who worked in God's temple. The Levite pretended not to
know the dying man and passed by as if he were running away to the other side
of the road like a priest.
|
12
|
|
After
the two had passed, the third man who passed by was a Samaritan.
At
that time, the Jews did not treat the Samaritans as human beings and ignored
them.
The Jews
hated them so much that they went around the long way because they thought it
unclean to step on the land, even though they could go quickly if they passed
through the land of Samaria while traveling.
|
13
|
|
But
this Samaritan stopped on his way and began to heal the Jew.
He
poured olive oil and wine on his wounds, disinfected them, and bandaged them.
Surprisingly, he put the man on his own beast and
took him to a nearby inn and cared for him whole night.
|
14
|
|
The
next morning, the Samaritan gave the innkeeper his two silver coins.
¡°Take
good care of this person. If you don't have enough money, I'll give you more
when I get back,¡±
and he left.
|
15
|
|
After
this story, Jesus asked the scribe.
¡°Which
of these three do you think was the neighbor of the Jew who was attacked by
robbers?¡±
The
scribe reluctantly answered.
¡°This is the Samaritan who had
mercy on him.¡±
|
16
|
|
Jesus
said to the scribe who asked the question to embarrass Himself. ¡°Once you know that, do the
same to you as this Samaritan.¡± This scholar of the law knew the word of God well,
but he was a person who did not practice the word properly. He tried to
embarrass Jesus, but rather ended up being praised.

|
|
We,
who believe in Jesus and are saved, must ponder deeply the meaning of the
story Jesus told us today. The word that says to think of your neighbor as
your body does not mean that you have to decide who you like or dislike.
To anyone who needs my help,
I must do as this Samaritan did.
We must
remember that true neighborly love is to look out for those around us who
need our help and help them with what they need, and strive to become a
person who puts it into practice.
