Bible verse : Proverbs 14:29
(NIV)
A patient man has great understanding, but a
quick-tempered man displays folly.

There are times when
we get angry in certain situations.
You can easily see incidents and accidents that happened because people
couldn't hold back their anger through the news.
Once they start to lose their temper, they soon raise their voices and fight.

The Bible of Proverbs, which is
said to be the book of wisdom, tells us in many places what to do when God's
people are angry.
|
5
|
|
Let's start with Proverbs
14:29.
[Whoever is patient has great
understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.]
This means that a person who holds back his anger is a wise person, and a
person who has an impatient temper is the same as revealing himself to be
foolish.
|

|
|
Another proverb also tells what
happens when you are angry and when you are patient.
[A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict,
but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.(Proverbs 15:18)]
This means that a person who is quick-tempered and angry causes quarrels with
others, but a person who holds back his anger stops fighting and brings
peace.

And
in Proverbs 16:32, it is expressed that a person who can endure anger is
better than a mighty man who makes great contributions in battle. It also
expresses that a person who can control his anger and endure anger when angry
is a better person than a person who takes a castle in war.

Among the characters in the
Bible, there is a person who suffered greatly because he could not hold back
his anger.
Moses, the great leader who led the Israelites out of Egypt, was that person.
This happened while the Israelites were living in the wilderness to go to
Canaan.

|
|
When we went to a place called
Kadesh, the people were very angry because there was no drinking water. The
people went to Moses and Aaron and protested harshly, asking why they had
brought them into the wilderness. Moses asked God for help. Then God revealed
to him a way to overcome difficulties.
¡°Take your staff and speak to that rock in front of the people. Then water
will flow from that rock.¡±
|
10
|
|
Moses gathered all the people in
front of the rock that God said. Moses was so angry at what the people did to
him that he said harsh things to the people.
¡°You complainers! I just need you
to make water come out of this rock!¡±
Having said this, Moses raised his staff high and struck the rock twice.
Moses' rod struck the rock, and enough water came out of the rock to feed all
the people. However, this act of Moses was a great wrong to God.
|
11
|
|
God told Moses to put his staff
on a rock and speak. But Moses, unable to hold back his anger, broke God's
command and made the mistake of striking the rock twice. God stopped Moses
from entering Canaan, holding Moses accountable for his disobedience to God's
commands. Unable to control his own anger, Moses saw the land of Canaan with
his own eyes, but he did not enter it.

Unlike Moses, there is also a story about a religious figure who
overcame his anger well. He is the King David we know well.
King David was ousted from the throne because of the rebellion of his son
Absalom. King David was in a hurry to escape with his servants barefoot.
|
13
|
|
When
King David and his servants arrived at a place called Bahurim, someone cursed
David. This man's name was Shimei. Shimei poured out curses that were hard to
put into David's mouth toward King David.
¡°You murderer, you bastard, go, go! A murderer like you must perish.¡±
|
14
|
|
Shimei did not stop
cursing him verbally. He picked up a stone and threw it at the servants who
followed King David. Abishai, the subordinate officer who saw Shimei cursing
King David, was so angry that he said to King David, ¡°My lord, why do you let
someone less than a dead dog curse you?
I'm going to go and cut off his head."
|
15
|
|
Shimei's action of cursing the king and throwing stones at his
men is a natural mistake even if he is killed right away. But David held back
his anger and stopped Abishai. ¡°If the Lord ordered that man to curse me, who
can say what?
My son Absalom is also trying to kill me, so how can I stop other people from
doing that?¡± David showed faith by looking at God first even at the moment
when he was angry.
|
16
|
|
David went on and left the matter
to God. ¡°Maybe God will give me a better blessing instead of Shimei¡¯s curse
on me.¡±
David did not retaliate against Shimei for cursing himself as
king and throwing stones at his
men. And as David said, instead of Shimei's curse, God allowed him to return to the throne again.
David received greater blessings from God by controlling his heart.

The words of Proverbs we read today make it clear why God's
children must control their anger well. Also, through the great religious
figures Moses and David,
we learned how important it is for us to control our anger. No one can be
angry in life. When you get angry because of someone or a situation, remember
the words you learned today and you will be able to reduce your anger.
Also, if you pray for the help of the Holy Spirit for a while when you are
angry, the Holy Spirit will help you not to get angry. A child of God who
believes in Jesus and is saved must become a mature person who can handle
anger well.
